Radical Community Workshop

I wanted to pass along this invitation to a workshop we’re sponsoring on Radical Community Living. Please pass it onto your community.

The White Rose Catholic Worker (Rogers Park) is bringing our friend Carolyn Griffeth – long-time St. Louis Catholic Worker – to Chicago to do a workshop on intentional communities called “Thriving Life in Community”. We’ll be spending the afternoon of Saturday, January 28th exploring the intricacies of radical communal life, its challenges, and ways to balance the need for self-care and political action. All are welcome to join.

We are looking for a new roommate at the Waterside Co-op.

We’d be very grateful if you’d take a moment and think if you know anyone who might be interested.

We need someone who is:

awesome, happy, interesting, thoughtful, peaceful, cares deeply about social justice/environmental issues.
a non-smoker, no pets
a non-drinker or light drinker. no heavy drinking. no drugs etc.
can integrate into our kitchen, meaning that they eat mostly healthy and sometimes not, can tolerate living with those who are not vegetarian and do cook meat, are into local organic foods, but not exclusively, neat, and enjoy cooking and sharing food sometimes.
would be happy living 1/2 time with two other awesome children (2 girls: 9 and 13 yrs old) The house has 3 floors, so there’s room for privacy when you want it.

Our house is fun, joyful, connected to the community and local environmental and justice activists, super-interesting, respectful, and big enough to find your own space when you want to read or be quiet.

The cost is $650/month, including utilities, laundry, and internet.

Stone Soup Co-op Ashland – 2 member positions ASAP

The Ashland House – the oldest and largest house in the Stone Soup community – sits at 4637 N Ashland Avenue and houses 19 fun, social-justice oriented people.

We are looking for two members to join our community, as soon as possible. Our membership fee is $515 per month and includes rent, food, internet, utilities, as well as the expenses for two community retreats.

The building is a former convent, leased from a local parish. The co-op itself has no religious affiliation.

Loyola and UIC are co-sponsoring a symposium on cooperatives. The keynote will be by John Norquist, former mayor of Milwaukee. There will also be a panel discussion featuring members of the Logan Square Cooperative, Dill Pickle, and other experts on various forms of cooperatives. There is no charge to attend.

New community forming on Northside

Currently we are a group of four people (one couple, 2 singles, some straight, some gay) preparing to form an intentional Christian community this fall. We are interested in eating together, praying together (mostly from Episcopal tradition,) sharing responsibilities for upkeep of home, sharing some finances, and extending hospitality to others. We are also interested in contributing to our local community through volunteering/service work and engaging in the public civic life of the neighborhood. Still in the beginning stage and looking for a place rent, so you can contribute to the formation of this new community!

New co-op in Logan Square seeks member

Do you want an affordable way to own a home? Do you live in a socially
conscious manner? Want to share in decision-making and property
management–with people you like? Then we want to talk with you!

We’ve started a housing cooperative on Chicago’s Northwest Side–planning to
move into our well-kept building in Logan Square by autumn 2011. We seek
individuals, couples, or families with an initial $30-$35K investment to
live in one of our six owner-occupied units. Each unit has three bedrooms,
1.5 baths, living room, and dining room.

We consider ourselves a well-organized and thoughtful group, and we’ve
figured out most of the legal, financial, and vision aspects of our
cooperative. We just need you!
